Crochet your own (highly magnified) borrelia bacteria, the cause of Lyme disease! Borrelia is a spirochete (spiral shaped), gram-negative bacteria. There are many species of borrelia, 20 of which cause Lyme disease. Lyme disease is vector-borne, meaning it needs a host to transmit it: the borrelia bacteria infect a tick (small arachnids) which pass on the disease to humans when they bite.
This downloadable PDF provides clear instructions of the materials and techniques you need to create your own giant bacterium of borrelia, with detailed illustrations of each step. It's A4 size which you print yourself, the text is fairly big and the step by step photos are clear. This pattern is worked as amigurumi (in the round), using basic crochet stitches so should be accessible for near beginners.
You’ll need fairly small amounts of double knitting (DK) weight yarns in a greenish-brown colour, 3.5mm crochet hook, stitch marker, and around 50cm length of wire. The completed bacteria measures around 30cm long by 5cm high, it is not a toy and not intended for children!
Ideal for crocheters interested in microbiology, public health, medicine and/or education!
Please note that this is a PDF pattern only, not a completed item.
